F\u00f6rsta g\u00e5ngen Sandhamn n\u00e4mns i skrift \u00e4r \u00e5r 1289 som Swea Sandh\u00f6 i ett donationsbrev fr\u00e5n Konung Magnus Ladul\u00e5s till Klara kloster i Stockholm. Fram till mitten av 1600-talet anv\u00e4ndes Sand\u00f6n, som en betesholme. \u00d6n kartlades f\u00f6rsta g\u00e5ngen \u00e5r 1640. Man kom ocks\u00e5 fram till att Sandhamn hade ett mycket strategiskt l\u00e4ge vid inloppet till Stockholmsfarleden. D\u00e4rf\u00f6r uppf\u00f6rdes en skans p\u00e5 udden intill det smala Sandhamnssundet som i folkmun kallas f\u00f6r \u201dSandhamns h\u00e5le\u201d.\u00a0<a Since then, the size of the village has increased. It is a short walk through the village. <strong>Sk\u00e4rkarlshamn<\/strong> is an 8-minute walk east of the village, where Sandhamn's sailing club also has its home base.
